Business Support - GENESIS

Raising the representation of Black owned, ethnic minorities and women in business.

Starting a business can be the most exciting experience ever. Seeing your vision come to life is a satisfying and rewarding process. BUT, it can often be a bit of a maze. At BE.Xcellence we support new starts up’s by helping entrepreneurs bring clarity to their idea.

According to the FBS, Black-owned, minority businesses fail to scale up. There are many reasons to suggest why, but we think the fundamental prerequisite is REPRESENTATION!
The lack of representation of mainstream business advisors means that there is a lack of cultural competency. This can affect a business advisor’s ability to understand your vision, and need for your product or service which could leave you disheartened. The lack of representation could potentially make it difficult for an advisor to see the potential or scalability of your idea.
You may also feel a bit lost, navigating the business jargon which can sometimes be a bit daunting, as well as not knowing which direction to go when planning or strategizing your aims and objectives.
Access to networks can also be a barrier to getting started.

However, with our business directory, we are building our networks daily and can often find someone, to suit your needs and help provide informal mentoring.
Then there’s the governance and obligations as a company director.

Pweeew, it takes a village!

The one thing I struggled with was writing my business plan. Working with Donna at BE.Xcellence helped me to, define my customer's profile and understand how I could grow my business. During our one-to-one sessions, I learnt more about costing, marketing and how to answer the questions in a business template. Using the business plan we developed, I have applied for substantial start-up capital.

We have been running our business for two years and was ready to go to the next level. We required access to networks and advice about funding. After a few sessions with BE.Xcellence we applied to the lottery, people and places fund and secured £10,000 to purchase a minibus. This was a game-changer for us because we can now offer corporate packages and scale-up. We also made a few connections in Wales and organised a NET-WALKING event with business owners, who are members of the BOMB. Our mentoring was useful. We also had a great time being a guest on Radio Cardiff. One thing, that has stuck with us that Donna said, was you can never have enough mentors, and you will never reach a point where will not need them. We all need mentoring.
